About DVG and Kagga

D.V.Gundappa or Devanahalli Venkataramanaiah Gundappa, is one of the most renouned writer and philosopher of Kannada was born in the year 1887 in Mulabagilu.
His field of interst was varied. He has written books on Veda,Vedanta,BramhaSutra,DharmaSutra,Engineering,Politics,Freedom fighters,Western literature,Islamic literature and etc.,

He has written books in Kannada,Sanskrit and many other Indian languages.
But best of his work is Mankutimmana Kagga which is known as Bhagavadgeetha of Kannada since it guides one to lead a happy and prosporous life by making him see himself through the poems, to interpret the thoughts of the poet in his own way.


What is Mankutimmana Kagga!?? 
Once we read and understand the Kaggas,we'll come to know the real flavour of Kagga.
We can divide Kagga into three distinct words :
            1. Manku
             2.Timma
               3.Kagga
1. Manku :
                  The word Manku means "Dull" or "The Muff".
DVG has used this word to represent the dullness,innocense, sipmle,less-talkitive,patient yet knowlegeble character of a person.

2. Timma :
                The lieteral meaning of Timma is "country Bumpkin". But it is the ankitanaama of DVG.
Timma also means Lord Shri Vishnu.

3. Kagga :
  
DVG has described Kagga in his own words as
                --> Rigmorale
                --> The tedious twaddle
                --> A long winded tiresome speech.
But kagga means the philosophy.


Awards and honours 

His Mankuthimmana Kagga is considered a Nobel prize winning material, if it had been written in English.

Dr. DVG was awarded Padmabhushan by the Government of India in 1974. The State of Karnataka under Chief Minister Sri Veerandra Patil honored him for his services to Kannada Literature in 1970 at Ravindra Kalkshetra, Bengaluru and awarded a purse of Rs 90,000. Dr DVG donated the entire award money to found the Gokhale Institute of Public Affairs (GIPA) located in Bull Temple Road, Basavanagudi, India.Indian Post issued a commemorative stamp of Dr. Gundappa in 1988.

 Features of Kagga :

1. All are 4 lines ( Chowpadi rachanegalu).
2. All are in (Aaadi praasa) means 2nd word of every line is the same in all the four lines.
3. They are called “Muktaka galu”. Independant verses.
4. They all end with the ankitan naama ” Mankutimma”.
5. There are 945 muktakagalu. ( 9-4-5=0, 9+4+5=18=1+8=9)
6.Kagga consit\sts of several questions to Mankind, in 945 muktakas,there are 595 question marks(?).
